Waddan: Where History Meets Desert Culture
Waddan is one of the oldest cities in the Al Jufra region, located in the heart of Libya. For centuries, the city has been connected to the desert and its trade routes, earning it an important place in the history of central Libya. Waddan is also known for its palm trees and date production, especially the famous Deglet Nour dates. The city is home to Libya’s largest grain silo, known locally as Al-Sawma’a, which reflects the importance of agriculture and grain storage in the region. The city is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including Waddan Mountain, while its historic sites and oasis environment give it a unique character.

A City Full of Heritage
One of Waddan’s greatest treasures is its heritage. Visitors can discover the ancient Waddan Castle, circular tombs containing remains dating back to the Garamantian period, and the famous underground water channels known as the Foggara. The city also has places such as Waddan Tourist Park and agricultural projects that reflect the connection between its people and the land. Another important part of its heritage is its traditional culture, including local clothing, folk songs, poetry, horse riding, traditional food, and crafts made from palm leaves. These traditions continue to connect younger generations with the history of their city.

A Proud History
The people of Waddan also have a proud history of resistance during the Italian occupation. Like many Libyans, the people of Waddan took part in the struggle against Italian forces, participating in battles in different parts of Libya, including the battles of Tuza, Afia, Al-Hashadiya, Taqrift, and Al-Qardabiya. Their participation became an important part of the city’s modern history and its people’s identity.

Waddan Today: Tradition Meets Adventure
Every November, Waddan becomes a destination for adventure lovers through the TeTe Desert Rally, a major desert motorsport event held among the sands of Waddan. The rally brings together participants from different parts of Libya and includes off-road car and motorcycle races, while its activities can also feature horse shows, folk performances, poetry evenings, exhibitions, and other cultural events. In this way, Waddan is not only a city that preserves its past; it is also a place where history, culture, nature, and modern activities come together to create a unique experience.
